Recycled furniture

With 8 weeks to go to my first hip operation and, with time and movement against me, I decided to renovate the conservatory, so that I could use this to work on various craft project during my recovery.

When I ran my Interior Design and Soft Furnishing business the conservatory was my workroom and then, when health dictated I work in an office, the space was unused and became the collection point of unwanted/unused items. Pain and discomfort meant I did as little a practically possible but with the date in sight (and lots of pain relief) - I had to get moving!

We had already moved a pine bookcase into the room and for months I looked for something similar. Then, one night decided what I really needed was hidden storage. So I started looking at cupboards, drawer units etc. When it hit me! I already had an item like this! What I needed to add were some shelves.

The search started again! And look what I found on eBay!

Dark wood shelves

The oak drawers were similar to those below, complete with cut off legs.

Work started - with wire wool and sugar soap I washed both items. Then lightly sanded and dusted them. Another clean with white spirit to remove all the dust before 3 coats of chalk paint and 3 coats of wax.

Of course, I removed the back lip from the cupboard and the plinth from the bookcase so that when put together they looked like one piece rather.

A bit of fabric - does a great job of covering holes made by handles - some new handles and the job's done!

Granted , the colour and design will not be to everyone's taste...
but it's a good way to recycle and re-use furniture that would have been binned.
